Different Types of Power Protection System
Power protection system is a part of electrical power engineering that offers various types of protection to the
electrical power system by separating the faulted part from rest of the network. Since there is various type of
risk involved in electrical equipment, power protection system has been developed to cover various level of
protection. Latest developments and research are continuously carried on so that it price can be reduced
considerably. There are different type of power protection system, each having its own capacities and features to
protect the computer and other electrical equipment. Basically they are designed to reduce or stop the impact of an
over voltage or under voltage. These power protection systems are installed between the power socket and the
PC.
Surge suppressors are the simplest form of power protection system, which detect any over voltages at a set limit
and the voltage above this set level is internally diverted from the computer. It often comes with an indicating
light that indicates when the device is in use. If the light is off then one should understand that it should be
disposed. Another type of power protection system is Power-line surge suppressors, which work by incorporating
metal-oxide Varistor that clamp and divert excess voltages away from the protected equipment. Metal-oxide Varistors
work quickly to protect the equipment and their response times are measured in nanoseconds and they do not
short-circuit the power while protecting against an incoming surge.
Surge power protection system protect by diverting surges from live to neutral, live to earth and from neutral to
earth. Cheap surge protectors
will only divert surges from live to neutral or earth while the better and expensive surge protectors protect in
all three ways, having multiple metal-oxide Varistors for each method of protection. Surge power protection systems
are designed to protect against surges only and it does not protect against lightning strikes.
Phoneline surge protectors are another type of power protection system that fits with phone line and work in
similar way to surge suppressors but it is only used to handles voltages that are normally found on a telephone
line. Phone surge protectors use GaAS arrestors which operate like a fluorescent tube. These arrestors are
comparatively slow and produces short-circuit on the phone line while actively protecting against a surge. This
causes phone line to be dead for a short while.
Line conditioner power protection system works by smoothing out the flow of power to the computer as well as
filtering out electromagnetic pulses. First it filters over and under voltages in order to supply a steady steam of
clean electricity. It also removes interference from nearby electrical equipment. Other commonly used power
protection systems are standby uninterruptible power supply and online uninterruptible power supply. These are the
most commonly and frequently used power protection system, which constantly supply power from its batteries if the
power supply is interrupted.
